It all started out in a room at the back of Den’s house in 2003, at a time when it made very little economic sense to produce whiskey... Throughout the earlier years, the lads were never far from mischief or controversy. One of their earlier products, the low ABV Kennedy range targeted toward the Asian market, was heavily criticised by the whiskey connoisseurs. Meanwhile, their first product, Drombeg, caught the attention of the tax authorities, but in true west Cork style, they represented themselves in fighting their case... and won! This resourcefulness and independence would stand them in good stead for the challenges that lay ahead. The early years were far from glamorous but unperturbed by external factors and public opinion, the lads worked tirelessly to make West Cork Distillers (WCD) a success. Hard graft was second nature to them, considering their previous roles in the fishing industry and Johns R&D role in Kerry Group. It was in 2014 that the lads moved into a new distillery on Market Street in Skibbereen, much of which was built by their, and the bare hands, of friends and work colleagues. One such example being the Rocket, ‘the fastest still in the world’ according to drinks consultants Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley. Fast forward to today, and the lads operate out of a 12.5 acre area on Marsh Road, Skibbereen. Their core West Cork whiskey has won numerous awards and is in almost 70 countries. They mature, distil and bottle whiskey for some of the largest retailers (Dunnes Stores, SuperValu, Lidl, Aldi, Tesco etc.) and well-known personalities (i.e. Graham Norton) in the country. Case sales have doubled every year for the past five years and the staff has grown to over 80 people. In 2019, they bought back 25% of their company, a deal backed by the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund, putting the lads in firm control of their own destiny.
