This eventually led to 13 American colonies separating from Great Britain, following the American Revolution. 🎉 Today the 4th of July is a federal holiday in the United States. Every year, fireworks, parades, concerts, barbecues 🍔, and patriotic family gatherings occur across the country to celebrate the independence of the United States of America. 📆 Did you know that on this day in 1829 the iconic London Metropolitan Police force (the 'Bobbies') came into being? 🇬🇧 Also known as 'Peelers', 'Bobbies' exist thanks to Robert Peel, the U.K. Home Secretary at the time, who helped pass the 'The Metropolitan Police Act'. 📃 The purpose of the new police force was crime prevention, with the close cooperation of the citizens of London. By the 1860s 'Bobbies' were wearing their distinct 'custodian' helmets. The nicknames 'Bobbies' and 'Peelers' are derived from Peel's first and last names. Aside from 'Bobby', and 'Peeler', there are many uniquely English slang words associated with the London police. 🚓 For example a 'Jam Sandwich' 🥪 or 'Candy Car' 🍬 are other ways to call a police car (named after the colour schemes of police cars). 'Old Bill' or 'Bill' are London terms used to refer to police officers, inspired by the U.K. television police series 'The Bill'. 📺 🇬🇧 Do you have any favourite London or U.K. slang words? 💂 Share below. 👇

Did you know that International Children’s Day is celebrated today in many countries around the world? 🌎 It was in 1925, that the World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland, declared this date a day for the recognition of the importance of children’s wellbeing and rights. 👧🏼👦🏻 June 1st still honours children in many countries such as 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇨🇳 China, and 🇵🇹 Portugal. Interestingly enough, the celebration varies from country to country, and some countries such as 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇫🇷 France, and 🇮🇪 Ireland, celebrate and honour their children on another date, in November. In the 🇬🇧 UK, children are celebrated on the second Sunday of May, while in 🇺🇸 the United States, on the second Sunday of June. 🧸 Wherever you may be, we wish you and your students a Happy International Children's Day! 🎈 👉 On which day do you celebrate the children of your country? 🎉 How will you choose to celebrate with your students on that day? 🙋🏽‍♂️
